Illuminating the Vietnam War through Literature
This session will provide participants with materials to use literature generated by the Vietnam War in their classrooms. With non-fiction, novels, poetry, short stories and music, students can examine a variety of perspectives on the Vietnam experience. Materials for using Caputo's Rumor of War, Lan Cao's Monkey Bridge and other works will be provided along with hands-on activities and a syllabus for a University of California-approved one semester English elective course. The Transition Home: Fact or Fiction?
This session will address the stereotypes about Vietnam veterans created by the media, Hollywood and fictional stories about the war. A comparison to the actual positive transition to civilian life made by most Vietnam veterans will be made using comparative statistical data and real-life examples. Veterans and their contributions to society, history and the nation's healing will also be discussed. Presenter: Manuel R. Román Jr., Ed.D. Designing and Implementing a Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project
This session will present experiences, historical significance and lessons learned from the San Diego Ex-Prisoner of War Oral History Project. Participants will examine and discuss oral history interview protocol, various recording media and several finished products representing varying levels of sophistication. Discussion will then turn to developing a Vietnam veterans oral history project that might be conducted by scholars, veterans, family members, students and other interested parties, and the uses to which such a project could be put. Presenter: Abraham Shragge, Ph.D. Dr. Shragge is the director of the Dimensions of Culture Program at Thurgood Marshall College, UCSD (La Jolla, Calif.).

Interviewing Vietnam Veterans
Participants will be broken into groups and paired with a Vietnam veteran who has volunteered to be interviewed. Each group will receive guidelines and sample questions to assist them, but are also encouraged to create questions of their own or bring questions from their students.

Powerful Learning for Your Class on the History of the Vietnam War
This session will provide the participants with an analysis and review of the major elements needed to implement a class/course on this vital topic. Explanations and materials include examples of a course syllabus, outline, data, exams, student activities and major concepts — all readily adaptable to instructors of all levels. Suggestions for media applications coordinated with course topics will also be available. The presentation provides a turn-key operation for teachers. Personalizing the Vietnam War
This session will present several ways in which students can honor local servicemen who died in the war. In order to learn about local “fallen heroes,” students use library, Internet and community resources. These projects not only have helped connect students to their local community, but also have positively impacted the lives of some of the families of those who served.
