The Aspen Summit, The Progress & Freedom Foundation's annual gathering of the digital world's most prominent business leaders, probing thinkers and influential policymakers, celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. With an agenda and speakers to fit the occasion, the Summit took place August 22-24 at the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen, Colorado. This year's focus: "The Future of the Internet."
Debuting in 1995, the Aspen Summit soon became one of the most talked about events of its kind. The featured participants this year included senior executives of Warner Bros., Hewlett-Packard, VeriSign, Time Warner Cable, Level 3, Symantec, Microsoft, Verizon, BellSouth and other major companies. They were joined by top government officials and experts, including FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell and U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division chief R. Hewitt Pate, to assess the future of the Internet and the communications sector.
Wired News has compared the Aspen Summit to the annual Davos event in Switzerland and the Renaissance Weekend at Hilton Head. Many participants view it as a time to reflect and an opportunity to look ahead. Ultimately, Aspen is about impact - the impact of ideas on public policy, on business strategy and on the future of the digital revolution.
