Background Information
On November 10, 2008, the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) released the Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) solicitation. This solicitation announces a new competition of this NSF-sponsored program with a preliminary proposal deadline on February 26, 2008. The PIRE Interactive Webcast at the National Science Foundation headquarters in Arlington, VA will discuss: the program scope, relevant research and education direction and themes, international dimensions of the program, nature of partnerships, models of collaboration and institutional change, and other issues of concern to potential proposers. NSF program officials will make a presentation and will respond to questions that are e-mailed in before or during the webcast.

About NSF
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense...” with an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, NSF is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal support. MORE
