Homeland Security Threat Cited From Lack of U.S. Flag Shipping, Crew Presence in U.S. Ports |
Current strategic sealift requirements in the logistics support the Iraq Liberation and War on Terrorism in addition to other related challenges such as the heightened awareness of port security have emphasized the importance of US Flag Shipping's role in the success of these operations. America's reliance on foreign-flag sealift that has supported the US in both Persian Gulf conflicts has been called into question in an era of shifting international alliances and more recently the intense concern over US port security with the presence of so many foreign flag ships and foreign national crews. This has created an urgent need to follow through with a public awareness campaign that will highlight the contributions and issues facing the US Flag fleet.
Maritime labor and management, the National Defense Transportation Association in cooperation with US Flag Shipping interests, are presenting the "US Flag Shipping Information Campaign 2004" in order to make the public aware of these issues.
